Aircraft crashes in Mount Pleasant

A small engine aircraft crashed near Mount Pleasant Regional Airport Thursday night, killing both people on board.

The plane was attempting to land at the airport shortly before 11 p.m. when the Federal Aviation Administration tower lost communication with the pilot.

Emergency crews responded to the area around 1 a.m. to search for the aircraft, stopping around 4 a.m. without finding any wreckage. Crews returned at daylight and located the downed aircraft in the woods just outside the fence of the airport.

The Charleston County Aviation Authority said it has notified the FAA.
