Impresa Aerospace plans to close its Goose Creek facility and lay off around 20 people by the end of the year, according to a regulatory filing and a company executive.
The aerospace supplier, which has facilities in Wichita, Kan., and Gardena, Calif., filed a layoff notification with the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce for its facility at 5 Corporate Parkway in Goose Creek.
Impresa CEO Scott Smith said the company did not get enough work from its customers to continue operations in the Lowcountry.
“We didn’t get enough tangible action by our customer base to reward our investment in the region,” Smith said.
Impresa Aerospace opened its first facility in the Southeast in July 2015 to support the region’s expanding aerospace sector and to take advantage of the growing number of aerospace manufacturers setting up operations. Impresa acquired Dynamic Solutions and moved into its existing manufacturing facility in Berkeley County. The company planned to create 72 jobs by 2020.
“We got the impression that they (manufacturers) had the desire for a regional supply base, but the reality was that we did not see enough tangible evidence that that was the case,” Smith said.
Smith said the overall industry is experiencing competitive pressures to reduce pricing on products, which trickles down through the supply chain. Impresa responded by reducing its footprint to keep operations as low-cost as possible, Smith said.
“We enjoyed the welcome the state provided. ... We certainly don’t want to be doing what we’re doing,” Smith said. “We wanted to create a thriving business in Goose Creek.”
