A new, gig-based moving service is launching Charleston service, with moves expected to begin next week.

Bellhops is an app- and web-based moving service that allows users to create a moving plan, receive a price estimate and match with movers and drivers in the area. Bellhops assembles movers and drivers based on the location, the size of the move, items to be moved and time frame.

The company was founded in 2011 as a way to help college students move into dorms. Bellhops’ headquarters is in Chattanooga, Tenn., and it has a second office in Atlanta.

Bellhops said in a news release that it has completed over 200,000 moves, with services available in over 65 cities in more than 25 states.

“Our difference is people and technology,” CEO Luke Marklin said in the release. “By harnessing the power of the gig economy and investing in technology, we have created the better way to move.”

Bellhops plans to begin moves in the Lowcountry on Feb. 19.

The company is currently hiring drivers and movers for hourly work. Average total compensation, including tips and bonuses, is $21 an hour, Bellhops said in a job advertisement.
