A new community of townhomes in downtown Charleston will offer residents views of the Ashley River and the Safe Harbor City Marina.

The Beach Co. has broken ground on 15 three-story townhomes and eight apartment flats at the corner of Broad and Barre streets in Harleston Village.

The company said in a news release that the development will include two- and three-bedroom floor plans, featuring street-level entries with wrought iron gates, custom cabinetry, hand-selected finishes, oversized showers with shower benches and tile flooring, soaking tubs, dual vanities, gourmet kitchens with stainless steel appliances, keyless entry systems, 10-12-foot ceilings and walk-in closets.

Each townhome in The Charles will offer a private balcony, gated garden and two-car parking garage, the release stated. The Charles will also feature a half-acre park with views of the Ashley River and open green space.

“Demand for our Jasper residences on Broad Street has outpaced availability since opening in 2021,” Dan Doyle, chief operating officer of The Beach Co., said in the release. “The addition of The Charles will provide a truly unique rental offering that aligns directly with The Jasper and its premier amenities, on site retail and restaurant establishments. The Charles’ design resonates with a passion for the city’s historic architecture while embracing its cosmopolitan present, making for a remarkable addition to the surrounding neighborhoods and western gateway into the historic district.”

Antunovich Associates, a design in historic preservation and adaptive reuse projects, was chosen to design The Charles. Architect Joe Antunovich, a recipient of the Legendary Landmark honor given to Chicagoans for contributions to the city’s civic and cultural legacy, also designed the neighboring Jasper community.

The Charles will include access to the deluxe amenities next door at The Jasper, such as a rooftop pool, commercial fitness center with free-weight circuit facility, yoga and outdoor fitness areas on the Star Deck, locker rooms with showers and saunas, private wine lockers and a demonstration kitchen with catering prep space for private events.

Directly across the street on Barre, on the first floor of The Jasper, is a community of restaurants and retail including Costa and Alcove Market. Spa Azure, Baseline Fitness, Form Charleston, Hutton + Home and Ashley Artisan Suites are also inside The Jasper.

The Charles is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025, the release stated.

In addition to Antunovich Associates, the following design, engineering and contracting partners have been selected for The Charles: DesignWorks, Forsberg Engineering and Balfour Beatty. Construction financing is being provided by First Bank.
