KATA & TWI: Working in Tandem

Topic Summary: Companies have traditionally copied lean tools from Toyota rather than adopting the thinking used to develop these tools. Kata teaches us to practice a routine of experimenting, known as scientific thinking, to achieve a series of short-term goals (target conditions) in line with a longer-term goal (challenge).
Without this focus on scientific thinking and learning through experimentation, we confine ourselves to what we already know and apply tools to processes even if they are not what is needed. We may see improvement but it may not sustain because it wasn’t what we needed to achieve our target condition. Kata teaches us to admit what we don’t know and experiment quickly to learn to conquer the obstacle.
Training Within Industry (TWI) helps build a culture of trust and respect where people can be comfortable with a Kata approach.  Traditionally, employees have not been rewarded for admitting they don’t know the answers, so we must be sure the relationship between management and employee is strong. True experimentation and learning will not happen without this trust. The Job Relations module of TWI focuses on building cooperation and teamwork. The Job Instruction Module focuses on transferring knowledge and the Job Methods Module is about improving processes. All three overlap with Toyota Kata thinking.
This workshop will show how both approaches work together to help achieve long-term goals.
Course Instructor: Susan Whitehead, Process Improvement Coach, SCMEP

THE FUTURE IS NOW: Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve Operations

Topic Summary: Manufacturers in South Carolina are already using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve quality, decrease downtime and increase throughput. It may sound intimidating but getting started with AI is easier and more cost-effective than you might think and uses data you’re already collecting.
Featured speakers will share real world stories and lessons learned in deploying AI to improve OEE and reduce COPQ, downtime, material loss and labor costs. Their AI experience is the cover story of Smart Manufacturing Magazine’s Nov. 2018 issue. Learn how to achieve benefits quickly and cost-effectively.  Cases discussed will include Predictive and Condition-based Maintenance, Supply Chain Optimization, Reducing Material Loss and Downtime Planning.
SESSION AGENDA
Beyond Dashboards: Making Data Come To Life — Dashboards are great for telling us what already happened.  Learn how to bring existing data to life with AI, finding hidden correlations and patterns in data that tell what’s happening next.
Getting Started: Practical Applications and Where to Begin — What is the practicality of doing this? How can AI improve quality and reduce downtime? Roadmap short and long-term opportunities for deploying AI.
Making It Real: Lessons Learned and Benefits — Hear the story of Atlas Copco’s initial foray into AI. Learn Best Practices for deployment with a focus on smaller, incremental rollouts. Understand key cost drivers, potential points of failure and how to measure success.

TELL ME ABOUT IT: Getting Employees to Take Ownership of Actions

Topic Summary: Management is responsible for addressing employee performance deficiencies, yet many attempts are repetitively unsuccessful. Why? Because they go about addressing issues the wrong way. Simply telling someone what to do and how to do it won’t offer long-term sustainable improvement. The “Tell Me About It” process is a proven, 5-step process for managers to use in getting employees to take ownership of actions and correcting their own performance issues. The instructor will be Nancy Eichstadt, a Managing Partner with Leadership Management International, Inc. Eichstadt will provide each participant a copy of the “Tell Me About It” process and share insights around applying it for long-lasting, sustainable results.
Course Instructor: Nancy Eichstadt, Managing Partner, Leadership Management International

But now, retaining the cream of the employee crop is a struggle again for many companies.  Where does that leave you? To build more loyalty and stave off an exodus, you may have to change your workplace culture.  We will talk about ten ways you can better recruit and retain your employees.

NEXT-LEVEL PERFORMANCE: The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team

Topic Summary: The New York Times best-selling author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni and the acclaimed Everything DiSC model come together in a breakthrough team development program proven to deliver business results. Based on the hit fable, The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team takes self-awareness to the next level – across workplace teams.
You’ll walk away with an overview of The Five Behaviors model and how it can work for you and case-study stories from companies who have used The Five Behaviors framework as their competitive advantage
A cohesive team makes better, faster decisions and taps into the skills and opinions of all members. It avoids wasting time and energy on politics, confusion, and destructive conflict and doesn’t waste time talking about the wrong issues and revisiting the same topics over and over again because of a lack of buy-in. And lastly, a cohesive team creates a competitive advantage and is just more fun to be on.
