Dorchester School District Two received a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to bolster safety on all school buses across district.

Each of the district's buses will have six security cameras, installed with the Justice Department grant funds. (Photo/Dorchester School District Two)As one of 206 grant recipients nationwide and four school districts in South Carolina, Dorchester School District Two will use the funds to add more video cameras to approximately 180 school buses, according to a news release. The competitive grant is from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services through the School Violence Prevention Program.

Each bus will have six closed-circuit video cameras, which significantly increase coverage, deter misbehavior, and provide a safer environment for students and staff on board, the release stated.

“Our transportation team is honored to receive this support from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services,” Steve Shope, district transportation director, said in the release. “These funds will advance our top priority, which is safely transporting our students and staff to and from school.”
