On December 11th, the Edisto Island Open Land Trust will host a free Holiday Celebration for the whole family at the historic Hutchinson House property from 3-5PM. The two headliners for the event include a visit from Santa, who will give away toys for the kids from 3-4 PM, and the afternoon will also feature Gospel Singer, Christal Heyward providing inspirational music as well as some holiday favorites. Burgerz N Thingz food truck will be selling delicious fare with special kids meals.
The Hutchinson House, constructed around 1885, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 as one of the oldest surviving houses built by African Americans during the Reconstruction Era on Edisto Island. The Land Trust saved the home from collapsing and has completed the stabilization, weatherization and first phase of exterior restoration.
A goal to raise $275,000 to complete the project has just been announced. The final phase will include the interior restoration, replicating the three-sided porch and replacing the north room on the back of the house. The home will be restored back to its original appearance and opened to the public to share the story of how land ownership shaped so many lives on Edisto.
Come out for the festivities on December 11th, enjoy the community activities and consider joining those who have already donated to this wonderful restoration project. Read more about this project and make your donations at Edisto.org.
