A new educational partnership between Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic and the College of Charleston is expected to bolster collaboration in data science, research and training projects.

Under the agreement, the warfare center and the college’s school of sciences and mathematics will share labs and equipment and partner on research. Students will have access to the center’s personnel, resources, facilities and technology, plus mentorship opportunities, a news release said.

Sebastian van Delden, interim dean for the school of sciences and mathematics, said the school works to provide experiential learning that goes beyond the traditional classroom or lab environment to prepare students for the workforce or graduate school.

“With undergraduate research and internships being our two top experiential learning activities, the partnership with NIWC is significant because it facilitates such opportunities for our students as well as fosters industry collaboration for our faculty,” van Delden said.

College of Charleston geology and environmental geosciences professors Cass Runyon and Tim Callahan, plus Tara Scozzaro, program manager for the S.C. Space Grant Consortium, worked to establish the partnership.
