A popular Charleston burger joint is replacing a longstanding restaurant that operated for more than two decades in Daniel Island.
Heavy’s Barburger will open in the former Laura Alberts location at 891 Island Park Drive, according to a news release from The Peninsula Co., which brokered the sale of the property.
Featuring 5,400 square feet on a half-acre, the property also includes a patio, according to the release.
Financial details of the sale were not disclosed.
“We wish Karen Elsey the most heartfelt thanks for being such an integral part of the F&B community on Daniel Island and the greater Charleston community,” Tim Rogers, the seller’s agent with The Peninsula Co., said in the release. “We are thankful she trusted us to facilitate this sale. The process took real work and effort, but in the end … everyone was pleased with the successful transaction.”

The name “Heavy” in the restaurant’s name is a nod to its founder John Haire’s grandfather, according to its website. Haire’s grandfather earned the nickname from family and friends in his hometown in northwest Florida.
Heavy’s is known for its smashburgers and extensive tequila selection, according to the website.
