Work begins on emergency response facility in Charleston County

Charleston County officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, March 13, for Emergency Medical Station 8 on Highway 174 in Edisto.

The new facility will replace the property that was originally built in 1971, according to a news release.

“We are thankful that Charleston County Council dedicated funding to upgrade this property on Edisto,” said Deputy County Administrator of Public Safety Eric Watson in the release. “This new EMS Station will be a huge improvement for our staff who work in this area and will allow us to better serve this rural community.”

The new station will be about 5,000 square feet and will feature a shared office space for EMS and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, a kitchen, fitness room, four bunk beds, a laundry area, an open bay garage that can fit four ambulances and secure parking and storage, according to the release.

“As the County continues to grow, we saw the need for this upgraded EMS station and I am an advocate for continuing to enhance public safety in our rural areas,” said Councilmember Joe Boykin in the release. “I am excited to be a part of this groundbreaking. This new facility is a big improvement for our public safety personnel to provide the level of service our community deserves.”

Construction is expected to be complete in late spring or early summer of 2025.
