The final Kmart store in the Charleston area will be closing in September, a company spokesman said.
Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Kmart parent company Sears Holdings Corp., said the decision to close the Summerville store was “difficult, but necessary.”
He added, “We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced.”
The 4570 Ladson Road store will begin its liquidation sale on June 15, then close in early September. Riefs said the number of employees affected by the closure is not publicly available, but those affected will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for jobs at local Sears locations.
Sears Holdings announced in early April that the Sears store at Northwoods Mall would be closing this month. Riefs did not provide an exact date for the closure.
Sears Holdings also closed three S.C. Kmart stores at the end of March. The Big Kmart in Mount Pleasant and the Kmart in West Ashley both were closed in 2014.
