Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie, is closing the Bi-Lo store in Mount Pleasant Square at 1440 Ben Sawyer Blvd. in late January, according to an emailed statement from Frank Archer, regional vice president of Bi-Lo East. An exact closing date was not provided.

“While closing stores is never easy for any retailer, we have made this difficult decision so we can reinvest in what matters most for our customers — providing the quality, service and value they have come to expect from us,” Archer said.

The 46,000-square-foot store is “underperforming,” Archer said, and employs approximately 40 people.

“We appreciate the many contributions our associates have made, and they were the first to know of this decision,” he said. “We are pleased to report that placement for every associate is being actively pursued at nearby stores.”

Bi-Lo operates 14 other stores in the Charleston area with more than 1,000 employees, Archer said. No other stores in the region are scheduled to close. There will still be two Bi-Lo stores in Mount Pleasant, at 774 S. Shelmore Blvd. and 1909 U.S. Highway 17 N.

In September, the Bi-Lo store at 445 Meeting St. in downtown Charleston closed, and the 35,600-square-foot building remains empty. Area business have donated nearly $50,000 since its closure to provide a free bus route for Eastside neighborhood residents to ride to other grocery stores.

Bi-Lo also closed its 1357 Remount Road store in North Charleston in the spring of last year.
