North Charleston-based Be A Mentor has received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status from the IRS and is now an independent corporation, according to a news release.

Be A Mentor was previously a not-for-profit under the Charleston Leadership Foundation’s umbrella.

As a 501(c)(3), Be A Mentor is exempt from federal income taxes and eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions.

Joe Waring, chairman of the Be A Mentor board of directors and director of human resources for Evening Post Industries, said the reorganization is critical to enabling future growth and outreach.

“Previously, our mission was sometimes confused with that of our former parent entity. This led to inevitable challenges in optimizing local community support, both operationally and financially,” Waring said in the news release. “Having our own 501(c)(3) status will allow us to much more efficiently expand and build the mentorship network.”

As part of National Mentoring Month, which runs throughout January, Be A Mentor is hosting a happy hour from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 17 at Avondale Wine and Cheese in West Ashley. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will go to Be A Mentor programming, the news release said.
