The Cooper River Bridge Run, originally scheduled for April 4 and later rescheduled for Aug. 1, has been canceled because of concerns over COVID-19.

This year would have been the 43rd annual running of the 10-kilometer foot race.

“While we share in the disappointment of having to cancel, we appreciate everyone’s understanding and support during this unprecedented time,” race director Irv Batten said in a news release.

The race had attracted around 40,000 runners and walkers.

People who had registered for the 2020 race have the option of participating in a virtual Cooper River Bridge Run; donating their registration fees to support the Cooper River Bridge Run and its charities and grant program; or deferring their registration to the 2021 or 2022 race.

Participants must make their selection by June 15 or their registration fee will be considered a donation. All registered participants will still receive the official 2020 race shirt and swag, and virtual run participants will also receive a finish medal.

Next year’s Cooper River Bridge Run is set for March 27, and the 2022 race is set for April 2.
