The president of The Citadel announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the next academic year after leading the school for over 12 years.

“It has been my honor to serve my alma mater and a privilege for Donna and me to see our young men and women go forth putting service above self in the military, private enterprise, public institutions and in the pursuit of advanced degrees,” retired Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa said in a statement.

RosaRosa graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration, after which he was commissioned by the Air Force. He retired from active military service in 2005.

The pilot and three-star general returned to his alma mater in January 2006 to become the 19th president of The Citadel, after serving as superintendent of the Air Force Academy for 2 1/2 years.

During Rosa’s tenure, The Citadel developed several new academic programs, including cybersecurity, mechanical engineering and nursing; and it expanded graduate and evening undergraduate programs and certificates.

“On behalf of the board of visitors, I wish to express our sincere gratitude to Lt. Gen. Rosa for his strategic vision and leadership,” said retired Lt. Gen. John B. Sams Jr., chairman of the board of visitors.

Rosa’s retirement date is set for June 30, 2018. Information about the search for the next Citadel president will be announced later, according to a news release.
