Detyens Shipyards Inc. won a $13.6 million contract to overhaul a ship for the Navy, according to a news release.

The shipyard will work on the dry cargo and ammunition delivery ship Medgar Evers at its North Charleston facility. Detyens workers are expected to finish the project by April 23.

Work includes cleaning and inspection of the entire ship, as well as deckhouse preservation, main generator maintenance, shell and deck steel replacement, dry-docking and undocking, underwater hull cleaning and painting, and sea valve replacements, the release said.

The contract includes options which would bring the total contract value to $13.7 million, if they are exercised.

Fiscal 2017 operations and maintenance funds from the Navy will pay for the contract. The Navy’s Military Sealift Command in Norfolk, Va., awarded the contract.
