Somewhere around midmorning on Saturday I started getting text messages about how fun it was, and where in the heck was I? Even though I missed it, I was glad to see that my forecast from last week’s blog was accurate. I try to be conservative and optimistic at the same time, so it’s cool to see that the surf was better than the waist-high I predicted. Normally, I’m chafing and grinding teeth when I know there’s a good swell running and I’m someplace else, but this time I was quite satisfied to be inland. For, on Saturday morning, I was sitting in Littlejohn Coliseum watching Blogson1 do the cap and gown walk and receive his engineering degree from Clemson. If you are a parent and have observed the ritual, it’s a proud moment. It was very satisfying for Mrs. Blog and me to be able to put a big checkmark on the ol’ parenting chart beside the “get son through college” item. It’s one of those major financial hurdles that justify all this receding grey hair I’m sporting. But most of all, I’m proud of Blogson1 for getting his electrical engineering degree. Clemson doesn’t just give those things out. It’s one of the toughest majors on campus, and you have to want it bad. Plus, I got confused just by the names of the courses, let alone actually having to do that stuff. Full-on nerd math in 73 variables isn’t my strong suit. So I’m giving a shout-out to Zack for a job well done. And now, I’m putting on my raccoon skin coat and big, red, felt hat and pimping him out. So, if anybody out there needs a freshly minted E.E. who speaks four languages, e-mail me. Mrs. Blog and I want our empty nest back. As for the surf this weekend, it looks as though we have another small swell with a decently long swell period on tap. It’ll probably be rideable on both Saturday and Sunday. My advice is to go surfing every day for as long as you can so you will be tuned up for the big Magilla. Next week looks like our first taste of hurricane surf, and you’ll want to be in shape for a couple of sessions of paddling against the rip and getting caught inside and thrashed.
