| 03/19/09 The State of Florida should just go ahead and pay me a salary as some kind of representative for its tourist industry. Because if you’ve been following my blog, you will know that for the past month or so I’ve been saying that the surf is somewhere else, and that somewhere is Florida. This week, I’m really saying it. The swell models are showing that we will get some NE swell this weekend, but it will probably be windy and choppy. And it’s all just a sideshow to what looks like another major swell passing us by on its way to — you guessed it — Florida. And this one looks like the get-out-your-7’6”-pintail-gun variety. The model shows swell pushing all the way through the Bahamas swell window down as far as Miami, so Alice, it’s the big one. Once again — and here’s where I earn my salary from the Sunshine State — get in your car, throw your boards on top and haul patootie down to Florida now. The only thing I can’t predict is how windy it will be, but there’s likely to be a long paddle out, so eat your Wheaties. The official Surfblogger call is to go as far south as possible and find an inlet with a jetty to block some of the wind and groom the size a little. If you surf near Melbourne at Sebastian Inlet or Spanish House, you’ll need a fullsuit, so Jupiter Inlet would be my landing spot of choice. It’s expensive to stay near there because it’s Palm Beach County and they live on a level above us mortals, so maybe stay up north a little and drive in. If you can take the time off from work, you’re likely to get waves down there through Tuesday. You might need a spring suit to cut the chill of the air, but if the NE isn’t that cold you can skin it. Meanwhile, up here, we can gird ourselves for another fullsuit, boots and gloves session. And if you’re like me, a hood feels toasty. Prepare to be swept down the beach by the nor’easter, so Wheaties are recommended. Gee, I should get paid by the cereal companies, too. It’s like product placement. Last weekend was pretty interesting. If you got up early Saturday, braved the misty rain and checked the surf, you most likely were presented with a difficult choice: Go surf some fun waves and freeze, or pass and stay warm. Being your full-service Surfblogger, I not only braved the elements, I went to the ESA contest and sat up on the walkover and judged a bunch of heats. Luckily for me, my wetsuit closet is also my snowboard closet, and before I left the house I just grabbed the whole thing and was pretty well rigged in and out of the water. The contest scene was fun as usual, with a good dose of chattering teeth thrown in to remind us it’s still winter. One observation — the younger the kids were, the less wetsuit and clothes they seem to need. You can tell I’m old because I dress like Admiral Byrd. And finally, there will be no blog entry next week because, once again, as your full-service Surfblogger, I am obliged to go surfing for a week down in Costa Rica with Vinnie. And, being fully committed, I’m not going to do anything more than that. Because if me and Vinnie didn’t do stupid things, stupid things wouldn’t get done. It’s the burden we bear. |
